So I have been scratching and licking myself a lot lately. Over the past six months, I have ended up at the vet 3 times! You guessed it, I have allergies! The first time I kept my Mom up all night obsessively scratching and licking and by morning I had managed to create a large red hairless spot on my chest. Mom freaked out and off to the vet I went – Sigh! The vet prescribed steroids and antibiotics for me. Apparently, I am having an allergic reaction to something. I hate taking pills and Mom hates giving me pills. Since I won’t just eat pills (even wrapped in food), she just shoves them down my throat. After a week, my hot spot went away. Unfortunately, a few weeks later it happened again and back to the vet for more medicine. Mom says that I am getting expensive! After, the third allergy attack my vet suggested that I try a new allergy medicine called “Apoquel” . Apoquel is a medication that I would have to take daily during allergy season. Mom calls it the miracle drug since I haven’t had another flare up since I have been on it.
Now, we did not go through the hassle (and expense) of figuring out exactly what I am allergic to because honestly it really didn’t matter. Was I really going to change my lifestyle if I found out that I am allergic to something like grass? Don’t laugh, a friend of mine actually is allergic to grass! Another one is allergic to wool in the carpets…bye bye pretty expensive carpets.
If your dog is displaying an unusual amount of scratching and itching, get them to the vet immediately. The scratching and itching is painful for us and can become infected if left untreated. If these symptoms are recurring, ask your vet for longer term options. It is well worth the cost! Never suffer through another allergy season again.
