I have always been an “A” type personality meaning that I strive for perfection and am a very hard worker, driven some would say. It has been very different working for myself versus working for a company. I find it in some ways easier to stay motivated and work harder, but at the same time negative feedback hits me harder being that it is so personal.
So motivation …So how do I stay motivated? Honestly it is a day by day struggle. Some days things are going so well and others not so much. We have been so diligent in our marketing efforts trying to explore every possible avenue for selling our book. It seems like every day we have a new thought on marketing our book. We have explored so many different outlets: on-line sales, bookstore signings, pet store signings, pet expos, local articles about us in community newspapers and magazines, outreach through dog parks, approaching national sales distribution companies, writing articles for local publications, partnering with charities, participating in dog walks and dog events, personal visits to various stores, etc. The list goes on and on. Some of these marketing efforts have worked out brilliantly and some have been disappointing. It is sometimes hard to understand what is working and what isn’t. Some of the marketing efforts I thought would be great turned out not to be and some I never thought would work do! Positive responses are so motivating and negative responses can sometimes be crushing to the spirit.
One of the things that helps me stay motivated and positive is that I am so very proud of our book. Every time I look at our book, I am amazed that it turned out so well! I cannot describe the feeling of holding tangible proof in my hands of something so creative which is pretty amazing for a person who has spent her working career in accounting (as uncreative as you can get!). Having a partner is the other way I stay motivated. We boost each other up and usually when one is having a down day the other is on fire… at least so far!
So we continue down our path with our good days and bad with the hope that the great days outweigh the bad days.
How do you stay on track and keep motivated?
