I was thinking today about friendships. What makes a good friend? How do you keep a friend? Is it the similarities or differences that attract us to one another? These are questions, I think, all women ponder about at one time or another. Women’s friendships have always been an important part of our lives. They sustain us, encourage us and push us to become better. Now I am not knocking men’s friendships but women seem to have deeper and more sustaining relationships. There are exceptions to this of course. I have an old college friend, Jeff who has the most amazing group of guy friends. They are still tight after all these years. I love it!
As Carey and I have become friends and business partners over the last year, I am constantly amazed at how much we have in common. Of course, there is the obvious: we are both named Kari (Carey). It definitely has made it easier for people to remember our names (very useful in the publishing business)! We are both dog lovers. I am new to the whole pet guardianship relationship (Max is my first dog) while she has had many great dogs over the years. We both love football. I prefer college (Go Irish!) and she prefers pro. We were born in the same year and are only 8 months apart in age – never mind the year. Carey and I both drive convertibles (okay, I know we do live in California). Don’t tell her, but I like her Audi way better than my Volvo. Carey and I are both early risers. We frequently are talking and texting at 5am (thank god her husband Steve is cool about that).
When we met, Carey and I were both at a crossroads in our career paths. We both were looking for a new challenge and passion. We found one another almost by accident or was it fate? Our similar sense of humor, which tends to be slightly sarcastic, has made it so much fun and, I hate to say it, relatively easy to write these funny dog stories. I guess the moral of this story is sometimes friends can come from the most unlikely places (like a dog park) and lead you down a new path in life. I hope you enjoy our continuing journey.
