My brother Earl has always seemed very nervous, but I was told he wasn’t always like this. When Earl was a year old he was attacked and injured by a bigger dog so it is completely understandable why he is always a bit on edge. As a puppy, I did not know how to play with Earl because I picked up on his nervousness. As I got older and more confident, I started to pick on him which mom says makes me a bully! At first, Earl tolerated my antics which I took as a sign of weakness. As I continued to pick on him, my mom started to get angry with me and began to discipline my bad behavior. One day Earl finally had enough and tackled me. I was stunned! But being a stubborn bulldog instead of learning my lesson and leaving Earl alone, I fought even harder sometimes even hurting Earl. My Mom was so upset (I think I made her cry)! What I didn’t understand at the time is that Earl drew the short stick in the dog health department. He has terrible allergies and bad knees. So, on top of being nervous, he doesn’t always feel well. No wonder he can be so cranky!
Recently, Earl had knee surgery and his vet found some new allergy medicine for him. Now that he is a healthy dog, he is much happier! Earl has started running around the house and playing with toys. It’s really funny to watch. He will grab a bone, buck like a bronco, toss the bone in the air and it will hit him in the head. I laugh so hard because he is completely enjoying himself. I have even started to play with him instead of picking on him. Earl wasn’t so sure about that at first given our past history. But once he realized that I just wanted to play, he was super excited. We roll around on the ground and chew on each other’s faces. It has been great fun! It’s too bad he can’t join Max and I at the dog park, but he is allergic to grass (I know seriously, grass?). I always make sure to save some energy to play with him after I get back from the dog park.
Our household is much happier now that Earl and I are good friends and Earl is a healthy dog. There have been rumblings in our house about potentially getting Earl and me a baby sister. My parents may be pressing their luck.
