Born in Toledo, Ohio some years ago (we will leave you guessing how many), Kari is a true Mid-western girl. Food, football (Go Irish!), traveling and books are some of her favorite things. Her love of traveling was probably a result of moving a great deal as a child from Ohio to Indiana to California and back again to Ohio. As an adult, this pattern continued as she moved from Ohio to Massachusetts to Illinois and finally settling in California (It’s been 10 years already). She has been very fortunate to have taken some amazing vacations: Europe (multiple times), New Zealand and Africa (her favorite trip ever!). Kari’s book collection is quite something and at last count her Kindle held over 300 books. Quite the investment. Kari graduated from Ohio University (not to be confused with Ohio State) with a B.A. in accounting and finance and spent the next 20 years in various jobs from public accounting to corporate finance. After being down-sized from her last position as VP- Finance from a real estate company, she was looking for something new. Kari got her first dog, Max and met her co-author Carey Laubenberg and her next journey began.
Max is a three year old food obsessed Puggle. He currently resides in Del Mar, California with his owner Kari. Max is a loving dog with a highly developed sense of smell which tends to get him into trouble. He is also curious about everything. Life is never boring with Max around. Hang on to your purse! In the land of spoiled dogs, Max ranks right up there. Max is not a perfect dog, but he is fun. Writing this book with his best buddy Luther has been the highlight of his short but eventful life.
Carey Marks Laubenberg was born in Phoenix, Arizona many years ago (Don’t ask how many). Carey’s favorite things as a child were being outdoors running around and playing with all her animals. Carey graduated Boston University with a B.A. followed by earning a Masters in Business at the University of Houston. After college she lived in Phoenix, Arizona and Houston, Texas where she worked at veterinarian offices while planning her entrance into the fitness industry. In Houston, she met and married her husband Steve who shared both her love of fitness and of animals. They opened their own personal training studio and had great success. Trying to escape hurricane season in Houston, Carey and Steve eventually moved to sunny San Diego. The beach volleyball for Steve was a plus! Their business flourished and so did their dogs (they have had five so far). Steve and Carey did take a slightly random, but truly incredible hiatus in Stowe, Vermont. After three years in the cold and snow, San Diego weather beckoned too brightly and they returned to sunny southern California. During this time, Carey started exploring the idea of doing something more with her animals, particularly her Olde English Bulldogs, Earl and Luther. This is when she met Kari Sherman and Max, and the rest is history.
Luther is a two year old, Olde English Bulldog originally from Nunley Ranch in Pelham, Tennessee. He now resides in San Diego, California with his owners Carey and Steve and his older, wiser Bulldog brother Earl. Luther is the sweetest and gentlest of souls. He loves everyone. Luther especially loves his very best pal and co-author Max. The only thing Luther loves more than the dog park is hanging out at home with his family. At home, napping and cuddling are his favorite activities. When he is not hanging out on the couch, you will find him holding down the bed while snoring loudly, very loudly!
